This is a full-time staff position with benefits within our New York team. While local candidates are preferred, we are open to considering remote applications from within the U.S. who can work standard Eastern Time business hours.
The Assistant Technical Director (ATD) supports, develops, and maintains the creative and technical toolset for the compositing team, with a primary focus on artist facing tools and scripts built within Nuke. The ATD works closely with the Head of 2D, senior artists, and the pipeline team to identify workflow bottlenecks and develop robust solutions. This is a hands-on technical role that requires a keen eye for both creative process and technical problem-solving.
What you’ll do:

Troubleshoot and maintain department tools that ensure seamless data exchange between core applications like Nuke, Maya, and Houdini

Act as the first point of contact for urgent technical issues within Nuke

Facilitate communication between the Compositing and Pipeline teams

Collaborate with artists to create tools to improve workflow, aiming to automate repetitive tasks

Document problems, solutions, and development efforts, together with usage guides for all tools, updating as necessary

Collaborate with Pipeline Technical Directors, discussing department and show needs, and proposing solutions/improvements where necessary via documented channels

Manage production data on a large, networked file system, ensuring data integrity and accessibility for all departments
Job requirements

Previous experience of Python and Shell scripting

Strong knowledge of Nuke

Strong knowledge of Linux/Unix

Familiarity with a variety of other commercial graphics applications such as Maya or Houdini

Previous experience in visual effects, CG animation or video game production

Excellent problem solving abilities

Strong communication and documentation skills

Ability to work well in a collaborative environment

A passion and curiosity for advancements in computer graphics technology, from visual effects, to software, or video games
You might also have:

An understanding of colorspace

Experience in Unreal/real time engines is useful but not essential

A broad understanding of the Visual Effects process, from shooting through to compositing is an advantage

Familiarity with Autodesk’s Flow Production Tracking (Shotgrid)
New York Employees Pay Range: $70,000 – $110,000 per year.
The posted range describes the minimum to maximum range for this job description in the state of New York. The range is posted in accordance with the New York Pay Transparency Bill. The range for this same position may be lower or higher in markets outside of New York City. Pay is dependent on the applicant’s relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
