UPMC Shadyside’s Ambulatory Surgery Center is hiring a Full-Time Lead Surgical Technologist to join our high-performing surgical team! As a Lead Surgical Technologist, you’ll play a vital role in preparing operating rooms, assisting during procedures, mentoring new staff, and keeping the OR running efficiently and safely — all while helping patients through some of the most important moments of their care journey.

What You’ll Do:
Lead the day-to-day operations of surgical techs — answer questions, resolve issues, and support performance
Mentor and precept new staff and students, teaching both technical skills and clinical judgment
Prepare and maintain the OR: set up instruments, drapes, equipment, and sterile solutions
Assist the surgical team during procedures: pass instruments, manage supplies, and ensure counts are correct
Maintain sterile technique and ensure all medications are properly labeled and handled
Facilitate education and training for tech staff and present at least one in-service each year
Coordinate with Sterile Processing to ensure instrumentation needs are met
Serve as a liaison and resource to the OR team, promoting communication and collaboration
Revise preference cards, assist with specialty item ordering, and participate in case scheduling when needed
Support patient safety and comfort: prep surgical sites, assist with transport, and help positioning
Monitor supply use and support cost-containment efforts
Completion of a formal surgical technician program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, hospital or the military.
A minimum of 4 years or more of Operating Room experience required.
Advanced knowledge of at least 3 surgical specialties.
Receive a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on last performance evaluation.
Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
Licenses and Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required
Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) OR Tech in Surgery-Certified (TSC) required
