How You’ll Contribute
The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project on its campus (called the Museum of Exploration), which will be completed in 2026. Components of the new guest experience will include a state-of-the-art pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk-through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and exciting new event space.
Reporting into the project management division of the Exhibitions team, the Project Manager will be responsible for the Society’s traveling exhibits program and the $350 million renovation project of the NGS headquarters into a new public experience, targeted to open in 2026.
The Project Manager will oversee the timeline, budget, schedule, and communication efforts for internal teams and vendors involved in the creative development, fabrication, installation, and remediation of exhibits for both the Museum of Exploration and the traveling exhibitions program.
This is a fixed-term role through August 2026.
Your Impact
Responsibilities Include:
- Manage multiple concurrent projects with various stakeholders, setting expectations, estimating scope, assigning tasks, obtaining buy-in, and ensuring follow-through.
- Develop and maintain detailed project schedules and budgets to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
- Define scope of work, oversee vendor selection and contract awards, and ensure conformance with deliverables.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Communication + Collaboration (20%)
- Liaise between stakeholder groups to ensure clarity, transparency, and project progress.
- Collaborate with the Director of Project Management to identify opportunities for organizational improvements.
- Represent NGS standards as a contact for internal and external stakeholders, ensuring timely and accurate communication.
Scheduling, Reporting and Tools (20%)
- Utilize project management software to manage work plans, timelines, and budgets, driving project schedules and completion.
- Maintain accurate records and archives of work.
What You’ll Bring
Necessary Knowledge and Skills:
- Highly organized, self-motivated, with excellent communication, interpersonal, and creative problem-solving skills.
- Experience managing complex projects, teams, vendors, and schedules.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize effectively, meet deadlines, and pay close attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Proficiency in project management tools such as Monday.com and Airtable.
Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree.
Minimum Experience: 5+ years in project management, PMP preferred. Experience in themed entertainment, creative industries, or museums is a plus.
Supervision: None.
Salary Range: $76,000 - $80,000, with a comprehensive benefits package.
Job Designation: Resident – flexible onsite presence depending on role requirements.
