SUMMARY:
Assists with the development of content for communications and marketing campaigns. Works with management team to target audiences including association members, non-members, other healthcare professionals, outside media, the public, and internal staff members. Is able to employ and help manage a variety of communication channels including print, web, newsletters, and social media. Is proficient in utilizing text, print, and video to create compelling and engaging communications.
The OMA is a complex and fast-paced nonprofit organization with multiple functions and serving multiple audiences. The communications specialist engages in a diverse and impactful portfolio of projects, including print, digital, and experiential marketing, spanning content areas as diverse as healthcare policy, advocacy, association membership recruiting, and retention.
The OMA stands at the forefront of numerous, quickly changing facets of healthcare in Oregon, and the communications team enjoys the privilege of serving as the collective voice of the state’s physicians and physician associates.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Website management:Perform oversight and maintenance of OMA website. Content management using front-end content management system with some coding. Regular review of and recommended response to web analytics. Planning and implementation of new features; developing and adapting website templates; keeping OMA communications at the forefront of good web practice and design.
Writing:Writes and edits articles, collateral text, website text, and social media updates. Conducts journalistic interviews with members and other stakeholders.
Communications Calendar:Maintains overall schedule of communication projects.
Graphic design and layout:Produces design and layout of print and digital communications using digital software, including print newsletters, e-newsletters, print postcards, booklets, brochures, advertisements, event invitations, and other marketing collateral. Works with printers, web developers, and graphic designers to deploy new design work.
Works with other staff, healthcare professionals, activities, and events for use in marketing materials and online content. Maintains photo database. Seeks and maintains media waivers.
Databases and content management systems:Learns and manages content systems used as OMA communication delivery tools, including web CMS, e-newsletter template systems, and membership databases.
Media:Assists in coordinating interviews or article requests.
Administrative and other:As a member of the OMA team, staffs OMA events, including the Annual Conference, Day at the Capitol as well as receptions and three board meetings. Communications-related records retention and management. Other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, advertising, graphic design, journalism, or related field
- Strong writer with demonstrable portfolio of successful, engaging articles or stories
- Experience content-editing one or more websites, including managing site architecture, responding to analytics, and engaging in creative decision-making
- Some experience with graphic design - intermediate to advanced level knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite products including InDesign and Photoshop; and Canva
- Intermediate to advanced level knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, and Outlook
- Detail-oriented with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Professional demeanor with ability to function as a representative of the association in professional situations
- High-level critical thinking and analytical skills, coupled with level-thinking and reasonable response under pressure
- Ability to take ownership of work and manage projects involving multiple stakeholders, with disparate timelines
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong graphic designer with demonstrable portfolio of successful, engaging design work
- Strong photographer with demonstrable portfolio of successful, engaging photography
- Previous professional experience in the healthcare arena
- Knowledge of legislative process
- Experience with event planning
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct staff supervisory role.
May coordinate the work of independent contractors such as printers, web developers, photographers, and graphic designers.
TRAVEL DEMANDS:
The OMA represents physicians and physician associates statewide, so there may be some overnight or day-trip travel locally, statewide, and regionally.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Work involves utilization of stress-reduction methods and techniques.
