What are we looking for?
The Chief Engineer – Construction Materials Testing is responsible for interpreting, organizing, coordinating, and executing assignments related to field and laboratory testing, special inspections, and project oversight. This leadership role requires making independent decisions on technical problems, mentoring and training staff, and maintaining client relationships. This position may travel at least 25% of the time.
Shift/Schedule: Core business hours, 8am-5pm

What you’ll do:
Provide technical leadership in Construction Materials Testing (CMT) and Special Inspections
Perform independent evaluations using standard techniques and engineering judgment
Make decisions and recommendations based on test results, field observations, and project requirements
Review and sign off on technical reports, lab results, and inspection findings
Develop and oversee QA/QC procedures for materials testing and inspection
Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and training to inspectors, technicians, and junior engineers
Prepare scopes, budgets, and schedules for task assignments
Maintain and develop client relationships, attending site meetings and representing Intertek with clients, regulatory agencies, and design professionals
Ability to provide expert testimony or forensic analysis as needed
Ensure compliance with safety practices and company policies

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related field
PE (Professional Engineer) License
15+ years of experience in Construction Materials Testing and Special Inspections
In-depth knowledge of:
Soil classification and compaction testing
Concrete mix designs and field testing
Asphalt paving and materials testing
Steel inspections and NDT methods
Grouting, fireproofing, waterproofing systems
ICC Special Inspector Knowledge in:
Reinforced Concrete (Structural)
Structural Masonry
Soils
Prestressed/Post-Tensioned Concrete
Steel (Bolting and Welding)
Familiarity with ASTM, AASHTO, IBC (Chapter 17), and local building codes
Ability to review construction documents and specifications for code compliance
Proficient in technical writing, report generation, and documentation
Familiarity with:
AutoCAD, Bluebeam, LIMS systems (Laboratory Information Management Systems), Microsoft Office Suite
Strong communication, leadership, and project management skills
Valid driver’s license and reliable driving record
Ability to travel to job sites 25% of the time
Preferred Requirements & Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Civil or Construction Engineering or a related field
