POSITION SUMMARY: The Controller is responsible for daily management and oversight of all aspects of the accounting and fiscal management of Meals on Wheels SF (MOWSF) and plays a critical leadership role ensuring financial integrity, compliance, and proper financial management. The role directs accounting and financial operations, including the monthly close, financial reporting, audits, budgeting, and grant compliance. This is a hands-on position working closely with and reporting to the Chief Financial Officer. The role fosters responsible and strategic financial management across the organization, providing guidance and technical assistance to department and program leadership.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In partnership with CFO, ensures a system of strong internal controls, best practices and preparation of financial reports in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Oversee all accounting operations, including billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, and financial reporting including assuring the proper handling of cash deposits.
- Supervise the organization's payroll function, verifying the accuracy of payroll, reviewing quarterly reports, and ensuring the proper filing of all payroll tax returns and payroll tax deposits.
- Establish policies and procedures to develop, implement, and maintain internal control practices to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data.
- Lead special projects and process improvements to drive operational effectiveness; develop systems and enhance ERP functionality to improve accounting procedures, controls, reporting.
- Review and reconcile all entries to the general ledger and post journal entries as needed; review the detailed trial balance, ensuring accuracy of all general ledger account balances.
- Manage all bank/financial matters and review bank statement reconciliations monthly.
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Oversee the annual audit process including preparation of annual financial reporting package including all A-133 and supplemental schedules. Ensure timely filing of year-end tax returns (IRS 990 and California I99) and other regulatory filings.
- Manage the annual budgeting process, coaching and working with departmental staff to drive best practices in financial planning.
- Oversee the financial aspects of grant management, ensuring compliance with donor requirements and accurate reporting. Work closely with program managers to track grant expenditures and ensure proper allocation of funds.
- Oversee the timely invoicing of City, County and other entity agreements for meal reimbursement based on the contracts and provide appropriate financial data.
- Oversee the maintenance of all service/vendor and equipment contracts.
- Provide critical financial insights and data-driven recommendations to support organizational strategic planning and informed decision-making; oversee expense allocations and prepare cost accounting analysis.
- Assist CFO with financial presentations for staff and the Board of Directors.
- Provide direct supervision of accounting staff; conduct regular performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.
QUALIFICATIONS and PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
- Excellent attention to detail, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and a high level of integrity.
- Exercise excellent judgment in decision-making and explaining his/her/their perspective to others.
- Experience in organizations of at least $15 million, nonprofit industry experience a plus but not required.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with concentration in accounting or similar. CPA preferred. 5-7 years of progressive accounting team leadership experience. Experience in nonprofit finance leadership roles in a service-focused nonprofit organization of at least $15 million budget helpful, but not required. Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and culturally diverse environment, with a track record of managing and developing accounting professionals to achieve the highest standards of performance. Proficiency with Sage Intacct a plus, and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel required. Familiarity with Salesforce desired. Requires passing a credit/criminal background check.
SALARY / HOURS/BENEFITS: Starting pay for this position is $145k - $160k annually dependent on experience. This is a full-time salaried (exempt) position based on a 40-hour work week and offers partial hybrid/remote work options. MOWSF provides company-paid health, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance (100% paid for employee only coverage). Our 403b plan includes a 3% discretionary contribution for all eligible employees. Vacation leave accruals start at 15 days (120 hours) and we observe a total 10 holidays per year.
