Job Description
The Washington Post is seeking a Deputy Head of Visuals to elevate our visual storytelling across the newsroom and lead a team of six senior visuals editors. This role involves shaping how we present and promote journalism on our site and across platforms, with a focus on innovation and strategic leadership.
Responsibilities
- Lead a team of visual editors embedded across the newsroom.
- Advocate for the importance of visual journalism within The Post.
- Collaborate with visual and data departments organization-wide.
- Drive ambition, experimentation, and innovation in storytelling.
- Develop opportunities for skill growth among visual storytellers.
- Educate staff on creating immersive and alternative story forms.
- Ensure a supportive work culture that fosters creativity and collaboration.
- Focus on audience engagement and personalization strategies.
- Optimize workflows and tools for visual storytelling.
- Contribute to The Post’s visual storytelling strategy.
- Align visual teams on story presentation to maximize impact.
- Set and adapt vision and strategy in collaboration with leadership.
- Ensure visual content shines across platforms in partnership with the Hub managing editor.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 years in visual journalism, overseeing design, photo, video, and graphics.
- Proven success in innovative visual storytelling strategies.
- Strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills.
- Experience managing multiple projects and deadlines.
- Deep understanding of ethical considerations in visual journalism.
- Ability to articulate design decisions clearly and create reader-focused digital experiences.
- Expertise in multimedia and data-driven storytelling tools and techniques.
- Vision for connecting visual journalism with current and future audiences.

This position reports to the Head of Visuals and is based in Washington, D.C. Candidates should upload work samples, a résumé, and a cover letter to our jobs portal. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with priority given to those received by May 12. The starting salary range is $161,000 to $230,200 USD, depending on experience and qualifications.
