Desktop support with Windows experience
SUMMARY
Works under minimal supervision to provide routine technical assistance to UT Southwestern faculty and staff with respect to personal computing hardware and software, computer networking, and/or telecommunications.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs routine and complex preventive maintenance, testing, and repair with respect to the Card Services database and operating systems and networks.
- Diagnoses and repairs routine and complex computer-related problems.
- Installs software, personal computers, printers, and other peripherals as directed or requested by users.
- Prepares recommendations for modifications or additions to personal computer systems, hardware components, and software applications; researches costs, market options, and trends available to meet user needs; keeps abreast of new and modified hardware and software.
- Troubleshoots routine technical problems and supports University Help Desk as required.
- Functions as liaison between Information Resources and designated departments for ongoing and special projects, including ensuring users are adequately supported, developing documentation, recommending improvements, implementing new releases and features, and attending committee meetings.
- Evaluates and resolves system configurations and ensures effective use of hardware resources.
- Maintains and submits various reports, such as equipment failure reports, repair records, and data sheets relative to each user request.
- May provide working supervision to other Technical Support Specialists; trains, or assists in training new employees; handles day-to-day questions from other Technical Support Specialists.
- May resolve complex systems problems, including coordination between users and components or local area networks.
- Designs web page text and visual content, navigational links, and page layout; consults with users to determine web needs and recommends solutions.
- Writes code using HTML, Dynamic HTML, Java, JavaScript, Visual Basic, Perl, or Common Gateway Interface (CGI).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
High School graduate and six (6) years' experience in a computer environment, including two (2) years providing technical computer support to customers, are required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Work requires knowledge of DOS-based and/or Macintosh-based personal computing software and hardware and/or knowledge of electronics and microprocessors.
Work requires personal contact with faculty and staff to provide technical support of computer hardware and software packages and resolve a variety of routine and non-routine problems.
Work requires phone contact with hardware and/or software vendors.
Work requires the ability to lift computer and printer equipment.
Work requires interpretation of policy and application of procedures or practices to work problems.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a general office and computer network environment.
Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of the Vice President for Human Resources Administration, or his/her designee.
