Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center seeks Histotechnologist in New York, NY to provide assistance to the Lead, Supervisors, and Lab Managers in meeting workflow and operation needs. Assist in collating the work for delivery to the fellows and/or pathologists including labelling slides, verifying patient and specimen information on working drafts and logging against corresponding slides and distributing slides to fellows/pathologists. Process fresh and fixed tissue specimens for surgical, autopsy, and investigative histopathology preparations under supervision. Verify identification of biopsy specimen containers against requisition information and enter specimen gross description and summary of section data into computer; return specimen to accession desk when discrepancies exist; and log discrepancies in quality assurance book. Place biopsy specimens into appropriately labeled cassettes; process specimen cassettes in tissue processor using the appropriate program to produce required time delay; embed tissue specimen using orientation techniques appropriate to the type of tissue; and embed all specimen types, including derms, whole mounts, and bone marrow. Section tissue specimen (paraffin or frozen) and fix on slides. Cut all specimens, including derms, whole mounts, bone marrow specimen, and perform re-cuts. Stain slides using routine histochemical staining method. Perform special stains and verifies the slide's quality. Operate and maintain equipment carefully and according to standard procedures. Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance (e.g. oiling, filter changing) on indicated equipment according to established schedule and maintain logs. Coordinate with the vendor to address any equipment issues, as directed by Supervisor or Manager. Change/ensure appropriate solution per equipment type and that levels are within established range for all indicated equipment. Check slide stain quality to ensure proper nuclear and cytoplasmic staining. Rotate reagents/ supplies in storage areas according to dates received and/or expiration dates. Train technicians and new hires on the basic functions of the laboratory, including embed and cut derms, bone marrow, whole mount specimens; and equipment maintenance. Record daily, weekly, and monthly, all quality control and preventive maintenance activities and notify supervisors, lead, lab manager, and QA specialist of all QC issues. Alternatively, employer will accept a Master's degree in the above mentioned fields and 4 years of experience in the position offered or related. Must have 4 years of experience with all of the following: special stains technique; performing daily quality control procedures on all laboratory equipment, and maintaining quality control and equipment repair, calibration, and maintenance records; performing various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the pathologist; troubleshooting histotechnical stains; operating microtome and cryostat; working on all types of surgical tissue; and operating automated tissue processes.
