Job Summary
Involves professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and / or research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation. Engineering Technicians may be assigned duties within a single discipline (e.g., electrical) or span a range of disciplines [Note: machine specialty work in a research or lab setting is generally performed by the Lab Mechanician job titles].
The Laboratory for Genomics Research at UCSF is seeking candidates to fill a Laboratory Automation Engineer position. Under general supervision, this individual will be responsible for overseeing methods for a variety of automation platforms, including automated tissue culture, transfection, and minipreps. Experience maintaining automation methods is required. Experience maintaining custom software with Python is required. Experience with Thermo Momentum, Beckman Echo, Hamilton STAR, Agilent Bravo, and other integrated and standalone lab automation equipment is a plus. The Laboratory Automation Engineer will report to the Head of Technology and work in close collaboration with the Biology and Computational groups alongside other automation engineers in the LGR to enable arrayed functional genomics screens.
Under general supervision, the Laboratory Automation Engineer will be responsible for identifying efficiencies, programming, testing, and maintaining the automation platforms in the Laboratory for Genomics Research. These platforms will support arrayed functional genomic screens and are critical to the success of the LGR. The Laboratory Automation Engineer will have the opportunity to perform hands-on assay/method development and learn about the full CRISPR screening workflow.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $78,900 - $167,300 (Annual Rate).

Department Description
The Laboratory for Genomics Research is a collaborative effort between UCSF, UC Berkeley, and GSK. The LGR is focused on scaling up current and next generation functional genomics platforms to better understand the genetic basis of diseases. The LGR strives to build advanced CRISPR-based genome editing and functional genomics platforms empowered by human genetics and computational biology to discover drug targets with high probability of success, expand our knowledge on the human genome in various disease contexts through mechanistic investigation into previously unknown genes and their networks, and deliver innovative research tools that are optimized and scalable for both academic and drug discovery research labs across the partner institutes. We are seeking a Laboratory Automation Engineer to develop and manage several integrated automation platforms that will be used in our arrayed CRISPR/Cas-based functional genomics workflows.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Engineering, Chemistry or a related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Minimum one year of related experience
- Practical knowledge of molecular biology techniques; sterile technique and mammalian cell culture skills; ability to effectively use/maintain laboratory instruments
- Working knowledge of programming (Python preferred but not required) and SQL
- Creative thinking and problem-solving, exceptional organizational skills, a strong work ethic, careful attention to detail
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including ability to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings
- Ability to work in a collaborative manner; assist in identifying any challenges and/or barriers and recommend resolutions
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree
- Knowledge and experience programming and developing automation platform methods
- Experience with Thermo Momentum, Labcyte Echo, Hamilton STAR, and Agilent Bravo platforms
- Demostrated experience modifying automation methods
- Demostrated experience creating automation methods
- Experience troubleshooting automation platforms
- Experience working with Lab Information Management Systems
