About the Role
This is a time-limited locum position with an anticipated end date of mid-October, 2026. We are looking for a dynamic individual who will be able to efficiently handle primary research manuscripts in the designated areas of stem cell biology, developmental biology, and specific aspects of general cell biology; to provide support for the Biological, Clinical, and Social Sciences manuscript team, as needed; to actively contribute to other parts of the journal and (as appropriate) to the publishing activities of Nature; and to perform such other tasks as the company may assign on an ad hoc basis.
This role can be in our New York or Berlin offices on a hybrid working model.
Role Responsibilities
Selecting manuscripts for publication in the journal, with the appropriate editorial oversight and within the framework of its current editorial policy. Aim for quality and speed of decisions, using the right mix of tact and firmness in communications with authors.
Assisting other editors in their selection of manuscripts through timely commenting on related manuscripts handled by other editors. As needed, covering for absent colleagues.
Consolidating and enhancing Nature's reputation in the scientific community by fostering valued relationships with researchers. Towards this, attending and participating in conferences and visiting relevant research institutions.
Defining topics for commissioned Review articles, assessing proposals from potential authors of such articles, handling the resulting manuscripts, and improving them via effective editing.
Soliciting and managing consortia projects as they arise.
Actively participating in planning an effective strategy for soliciting and publishing the best research in the indicated fields in Nature.
Experience, Skills, & Qualifications:
PhD level (or equivalent) or beyond. Post-doctoral experience preferred. Editorial experience is beneficial but not required.
In-depth knowledge of the relevant fields of scientific research.
Familiarity with and ability to continue developing long-term professional relationships with key members of these scientific communities and understanding of their needs.
Authoritative and confident decision-making in the areas of expertise.
Strong written and verbal communication and editing skills.
Strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
