Position Overview
The City of Fairfax Police Department, located in Northern Virginia, is actively hiring Police Officers to join their exceptional team. This is a full-time, on-site role for those dedicated to public service and community safety.
Salary
$63,828 – $107,249 annually
Hiring Process
Applications are now being accepted to establish an eligibility list. Selected applicants will undergo a comprehensive eight-step hiring process:

- Written Test (waived for DCJS-certified applicants)

- Background Investigation
- Conditional Job Offer
- Polygraph Testing
- Structured Interview
- Psychological and Physical Examination
Note: Applicants currently certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) are not required to attend the 21-week Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy.
Qualifications
To be considered, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Minimum 20 years and 6 months of age at time of application (no upper age limit)
- High school diploma or valid GED certificate
- Valid driver’s license
- U.S. citizenship at time of application
- No felony or domestic assault convictions
- Good moral character, favorable credit record
- Strong communication skills and the ability to react swiftly under pressure

- Successfully complete the applicant screening process
Tattoos & Appearance Policy
Sworn officers must comply with department grooming and appearance standards.
- Prohibited Tattoos: Obscene, offensive, gang-related, or discriminatory
- Visible Tattoos: Not allowed on the head, neck, or face
- Questionable tattoos require written explanation and photo for review
- Non-compliant tattoos must be fully covered
Officers must also agree to a non-tobacco use clause as part of their employment agreement.
Examples of Duties
- Patrol designated areas to preserve law and order
- Enforce laws and ordinances
- Respond to calls involving suspicious activity, criminal incidents, and community service requests
- Conduct traffic enforcement
- Prepare reports and maintain records
- Perform all other duties as assigned

- Work Schedule: Permanent 12-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays
