Position Description: Program Director
Reports to: Executive Director (ED)

The heart of Next Step is casework/coaching, STRIVE employment readiness training, and Adult Basic Education (ABE). Program team members partner with participants to set goals and remove barriers to achieve them—largely but not exclusively in employment, housing, health, and education. For 38 years, SMGW has been proud to have a diverse team of full-time paid staff and part-time volunteers dedicated to individual and community change, working to end systemic racism and promote socio-economic and racial equity. While faith-based, participation and employment are open to all regardless of religious affiliation.
Position Summary
The Program Director (PD) oversees all components of Next Step. This person ensures the delivery of quality program services and positive participant outcomes across sites; leads program data collection, analysis, and reporting with assistance from the Program Coordinator (PC); develops new partnerships and expands existing ones in collaboration with the management team; and increases participant service utilization. The PD supervises the PC, who shares oversight of Lead Caseworkers, and directly supervises the STRIVE team (STRIVE Trainer, Employer Specialist, SWC Caseworker) and the Adult Basic Education (ABE) team at Congress Heights, SE DC.
The PD is a member of the Management Team, along with the Development Director, COO, and ED. They co-lead the Program Committee with the Committee Chair and participate in Board Meetings and key organizational functions involving donors and leadership. The PD collaborates with the Volunteer Manager on volunteer engagement and training, and works with the ED on strategic initiatives. The PD and ED are the primary contacts for SMGW’s affiliation with STRIVE National.

Responsibilities
Program Oversight
- Provides oversight of program operations, staffing, and initiatives across multiple sites, ensuring adequate staffing, robust programming, and maximum service utilization.
- Oversees execution and reporting for all local and federal grants, e.g., FEMA, DC Department of Employment Services (DOES).
- Gathers, prepares, analyzes, and interprets program data, leading troubleshooting conversations with Salesforce vendors in collaboration with the PC.
- Creates quality assurance systems to ensure accurate and timely data entry for all participants, including transmission of STRIVE data to STRIVE National.
- Submits utilization and outcomes reports, presents findings and insights at management, board, and donor meetings, and for funding proposals.
- Maintains standards and procedures for casework and training, conducting periodic audits to ensure compliance and inform training needs.
Staff Leadership & Supervision
- Supervises Team Leaders and the PC, fostering professional development.
- Conducts performance reviews, recommends raises/promotions, and develops performance improvement plans as needed.
- Coordinates team meetings, team-building activities, and strategic planning sessions.
- Leads recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of staff and volunteers, collaborating with the Volunteer Manager on volunteer opportunities and training.
Partnership Creation and Sustainability
- Cultivates new partnerships for referrals, training, and community engagement.
- Sustains and expands current partnerships, maximizing cross-training and referral opportunities.
- Represents SMGW at community events to enhance influence and stay informed on best practices in workforce development, housing, and social services.
Qualifications & Requirements
- At least 5 years of supervisory experience managing nonprofit programs with a budget of $1 million+ focused on case management and employment training.
- At least 2 years supervising middle managers.
- Minimum 3 years of direct case management experience with adult clients.
- An MSW or equivalent is required due to clinical demands.
- At least 3 years overseeing employment training/workforce development programs, including individual and group training.
- Active relationships with community-based service providers and government agencies in the Greater Washington area.
- Understanding of how structural racism affects inequities in housing, employment, and healthcare, and ability to incorporate this knowledge into programming.
- Competence in data collection, analysis, reporting; Salesforce knowledge is a plus.
- Strong analytical, planning, implementation, and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel.
- Ability to travel within the metro area and attend occasional evening events.
Salary: Starting salary range is $80,000 - $100,000.
