About the Professional Staff Nurse Role:
The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and a key member of the care delivery team. This role involves setting standards for the level and quality of care, managing patient care activities, and collaborating with team members to achieve desired patient outcomes. Responsibilities include:
Leadership and Collaboration: Establish and maintain relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families.
Patient Care: Apply independent judgment, communication, and collaboration to provide high-quality nursing care.
Professional Development: Engage in continuous learning and development, participate in unit-based governance, and support quality improvement efforts.
Teaching and Mentorship: Educate patients, families, students, and new staff, and serve as a preceptor when needed.
Quality Improvement: Utilize research and evidence-based practices to enhance clinical care and patient satisfaction.
Responsibilities:
Develop and maintain productive working relationships, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment.

The individual must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care and interactions for the patient population served by their assigned unit. This includes understanding the principles of growth and development across the lifespan and the ability to assess and interpret data reflective of each patient's status. The individual must identify and respond to age-specific needs and deliver care in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Experience: 0-2 years of nursing experience.
Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Skills:
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary/support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
Ability to function effectively in a complex, fast-paced environment with changing priorities and specialized equipment.
Sound clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to lead others in the application of the nursing process.
Physical stamina and dexterity for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning.
Work Schedule Flexibility
UPMC offers a variety of flexible scheduling options. In addition to traditional rotating/flexible shifts, special programs are available for primarily night or weekend shifts with premium pay differentials. Employees hired into or transitioning into these programs must have at least six months of nursing experience and may be required to complete orientation during regular business hours. Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
Required:
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of practice or a compact state under the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC).
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire/transfer.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 1 year of hire/transfer.
Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI clearances with renewal.
Preferred:
UPMC-approved national certification.
Graduate Nurses:
Must pass the licensure exam within six months of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first.
Temporary permits are valid for one year from graduation or until exam results are known. UPMC requires licensure within six months of the start date. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination or demotion.
Licensure Note:
Employees working under an out-of-state NLC license who change residency to the facility's state must apply for in-state licensure within 60 days of the move.
