Organization Summary
Founded in 1993 by Alex McElree, a Vietnam War veteran, Operation Dignity has been a leading force in combating homelessness. Alex, who faced addiction and homelessness himself, feared that he had survived war only to die on the streets of Oakland. After stabilizing his life, he began his mission with a few beds in a small Oakland shelter.
The name "Operation Dignity" was chosen to reflect both their military service and their goals in civilian life. Since then, Operation Dignity has expanded significantly, now managing eight (8) properties that provide shelter and housing to the unhoused of Alameda County.
