Position: Tenant Rights Counselor
Reports to: MSROC Program Manager
Compensation: $23-$25 per hour, commensurate with experience. Full-time, non-exempt position (possibility of remote or flexible work schedules). Position Objective
The MSROC, in partnership with Lyon Martin Health Services/Women's Community Clinic, the Mission Neighborhood Resource Center, and SFADC, organizes with SRO tenants to protect housing, improve living conditions, and fight for housing justice. We seek a full-time Tenant Rights Counselor to provide counseling to low-income tenants, manage a caseload, assist with formal documentation, conduct workshops, outreach, and participate in citywide coalitions.
Responsibilities
- Perform intake and provide housing counseling to tenants, including monolingual Spanish speakers, assessing problems and providing information.
- Refer tenants to other supportive programs as needed.
- Advocate for tenants by coordinating with agencies on issues like code enforcement and eviction prevention.
- Facilitate Know-Your-Rights workshops, leadership development, and outreach.
- Participate in advocacy campaigns and organize tenants for victories.
- Represent MSROC in coalitions and collaborate with partner organizations.
- Maintain updated client information and documentation.
- Coordinate tenant participation in meetings, clinics, and community events.
- Conduct outreach and distribute educational materials.
- Collaborate on community issues like land use, civic engagement, and immigrant rights.
- Attend team meetings and report on activities.

- Operate according to organizational policies and values, including diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Desired Skills
- Experience and passion for working on affordable housing, land use, and immigrant rights issues, especially in SF and the Mission District.
- Commitment to justice and equity.
- Strong understanding of housing and tenant rights.
- Ability to interact respectfully with diverse clients, including fluency in Spanish.
- Quick responsibility assumption, independent work, teamwork, good judgment, multitasking, and meeting deadlines.
- Experience working with low-income immigrant families; ideally 2+ years as organizer, advocate, or paralegal.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends for flexible scheduling.
